On an old wall in the village of Saffron Walden, Essex.

Saffron is one of my favourite spices and the crocuses from which it comes used to be grown in this village in the 16th century. The dead vine reminded me of the strands of saffron without which no paella is complete.

My visit to Oxford led me to end up staying in the next street to the wonderful Headington Shark. I didn't realise this, but when I saw it I immediately knew what it was and the memory of it clicked into place.

Now in its 21st year, it's a great story of ingenuity and persistence on behalf of its perpetrator. Such glowing examples of English eccentricity (even if the instigator was/is an American in Oxford) are all too rare these days and it stands as a great piece of folk art.

Too bad, from a photography point of view, that it is still undergoing restoration, but maybe the scaffold cladding and 'For Sale' board next door adds something...

Yesterday, to Oxford, and a chance to visit the University Botanic Gardens and compare them with the Cambridge University version with which I am well acquainted.

Initial impressions were that they didn't quite have the same appeal as their counterpart, but as I spent more time there I actually began to enjoy the immense history that they encompass (being much older - founded 1642 - and still on their original site in the heart of the City).

Yesterday we had an opportunity to visit The Henry Moore Foundation again and found that they had some different work on show.
With a strong sunlight and shadows, I had a play around with some of the shapes within the sculptures.

It's hard to believe that nearly a month has passed without me posting anything here. I guess I'm in one of those periodic phases where there is nothing that I feel moved to share here, but it will undoubtedly pass as soon as I get into a picture-making frame of mind again.

Today there was some indication that the muse had not totally deserted me when I saw the most remarkable light outside our kitchen window (dull, wet and cloudy light as with most of our June, but interesting nonetheless). This is the view that greets me every morning when I venture into the kitchen - usually to make a pot of tea. At that time of the day it always looks black and white...

These are London Plane trees (Platanus x hispanica) given a bit of toning and with a kind of pseudo infra-red effect caused by HDR-tonemapping a single file.
